The Mission

Today marks the start of my foray into the wild world of food blogging.  I've been an intrepid adventurer of the urban apartment kitchen for about two years now and finally decided it's time to take this act on the road!

Like so many people, my relationship with food has been complicated.  I grew up in a small city in the prairies of Canada and was a classic "picky" eater.  You know the kind, the kid who drives her parents crazy.  Foods couldn't mingle on the plate; if there was a sauce I was suspicious; and I rarely ventured outside of salad, potatoes and chicken fingers.  Luckily for me, my culinary world expanded after moving to big city Ontario.  I became a lover of spicy foods and soon grew to appreciate more exotic cuisines.  My palate expanded even more after a year living in South Korea and visits to the countries of Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, China and Tibet.  I still have my share of food phobias, but on the whole, consider myself a touch more adventurous than the average person.

Breakfast has always been one of my favourite parts of the morning.  It's the first thing I do when I wake up and I never skip it, even when I am running late and have five minutes to catch that bus.  However, lately I've lost interest.  Muffins, pancakes, eggs and bacon, and that old stand-by cereal haven't been satisfying me the way they used to.  I started to wonder why we put so little effort into what is often called, "the most important meal of the day."

Surely the answer for most of us is that there just isn't time in the morning to cook something more elaborate.  But that doesn't always hold up - what about the week-ends and holidays?  Cereal still dominates at my house, and if I'm really ambitious, I'll make some muffins or pancakes, not exactly ground-breaking.  Think about it - would you tolerate eating exactly the same meal for supper every day?  No, then why for breakfast?  So, I made a plan......

The Mission:  To explore new breakfast foods, one country at a time.  Every Saturday we will try the typical breakfast of a different country.  (see "The Rules" for more)

My accomplice in this endeavor is my husband Jon.

Thanks for joining us and let the adventure begin!

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"

"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"

"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully. "It's the same thing," he said.”
